World Oceans Day 2022 – Revitalization: Collective Action For The Ocean
The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all—but its health is at a tipping point. As the past years have shown us, we need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.
June 8th is UN World Oceans Day 2022. First proposed at the Global Forum of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNED), World Oceans Day was officially designated by the UN in 2008. Since its conception, World Oceans Day has been an opportunity to raise global awareness to the benefits humankind derives from the ocean as well as our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably.
This year’s theme “Revitalization: Collective Action For The Ocean” is focused on shedding light on the communities, ideas, and solutions that are working together to protect and revitalize the ocean and everything it sustains. Oceans provide important ecological, financial, and social services. Oceans sequester carbon on a massive scale, supporting key global industries, and provide aesthetic benefits to communities and cultures world-wide—benefits that are often taken for granted. Here you can find more information on how individuals, communities, and organizations are celebrating and stewarding our oceans.
We think it is important to support international days like UN World Oceans Day as a part of our mission to promote green action locally and globally. UN World Ocean Day may only be June 8th but organizations like the Blue Carbon Initiative
and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution advocate for marine ecosystems year round. The Blue Carbon Initiative is a cross-sector, global program focused on the restoration and sustainable management of ocean, marine and coastal ecosystems, while Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a leader in oceanographic research, education and communication. For more information on the amazing work they do, visit their websites at thebluecarboninitiative.org and whoi.edu.
On the heels of UN World Environment Day, we wanted to share practical tips and tricks for making sustainability a priority in your life.
