Optimere | 2022 Sustainability Plan

2022 Sustainability Plan

Optimere is a mission-driven company committed to creating positive change both for the community we serve and the community we’re a part of. Sustainability is a key pillar of our strategic ambition and we’re continually implementing new initiatives to minimize our carbon footprint, like using sustainable tableware and minimizing printing in our offices. We firmly believe technology can and should be used to further sustainable development, and partnering with Green Places is the next milestone in our pursuit of an inclusive, green, and sustainable future.

Our Initiatives

Clean Commuting

Clean Commuting

We engage in carpool or public transportation for group travel to attend team activities. In 2019, passenger cars produced the most carbon emissions compared to all other transportation methods in the United States. In cities with public transportation options, clean committing could be taking the bus or riding the subway - both of which lower your carbon footprint as a commuter. Biking and walking in larger cities are options that completely eliminate the emissions from burning fossil fuels. As a company, offering clean commuting incentives can encourage employees to reduce their footprint and serve as a reminder that you are committed to climate action.

Less Paper

Less Paper

From our product to our tools, we are primarily digital and have minimized paper usage. Paper makes up about 25% of landfill waste, so being mindful about paper usage is a great step for climate action. By shifting to a paperless office, employees gain easy access to digital files that are simple to find, edit, and share. Company data and information remain safe and secure in digital document storage systems that employees can easily access on their laptops or mobile phones. Going paperless also eliminates costs associated with office supplies and printers.

Carbon Labeling

Carbon Labeling

In 2022, we will be implementing carbon labeling around our offices in order to educate our employees on opportunities to be more sustainable. We'll identify opportunities for energy savings and waste reduction (ie. unplug, power down, recycle, compost, turn off lights), then create and distribute labels as quick tips or reminders for employees, highlighting the impact of each action.

Carbon Neutral

Carbon Neutral

Being carbon neutral means your carbon emissions are balanced by carbon negative projects to eliminate your impact on the environment. Research shows that sustainable businesses have an advantage over others. By becoming a carbon neutral business, you can help fight climate change, increase your company value, improve employee recruiting and retention, build brand loyalty, attract more customers and improve the overall community. Investing in carbon negative projects offers a effective solution to take action against emissions from essential business operations that can't be eliminated.

Low Emission Flying

Low Emission Flying

We strive for value-based flight planning in order to reduce the amount of flights we take as a company. According to experts, 3-4% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States come from commercial air travel. While there are several promising solutions to reduce travel emissions on the horizon, there are also ways companies can fly smarter right now. The first step is to determine exactly what warrants business travel and eliminate any travel that can be deemed unnecessary. When booking flights, businesses can commit to use Google’s flight carbon calculator and choose flight paths with the least emissions. Combined, these practices are cost saving and better for the environment, lowering overall emissions and eliminating unnecessary travel.

Remote Work Options

Remote Work Options

Remote work is optional for Optimere employees who do not need to be in the office. Remote working can be beneficial to businesses and employees alike. Having a remote workforce reduces travel time and emissions from daily commuting as well as reduces the need for larger office spaces that require energy to maintain. Working from home also can reduce waste and costs associated with building office supplies such as paper, ink, and single-use utensils while also minimizing general waste generation.

Sustainable Events and Swag

Sustainable Events and Swag

Starting in 2022, we're making in-person company events more sustainable. We'll be identifying areas of opportunity for energy savings and waste reduction in the planning and execution of our company events going forward, and implementing more sustainable solutions wherever possible. Additionally, we're working to find more sustainable options for company swag.

Grid Connected Solar Project

Centered in the Charanka Village in the state of Gujarat, this solar grid project is the first of its kind for India. The solar plant produces 25 megawatts (MW) of electricity and is connected to the Indian electricity grid - meaning the country is diversifying its energy sources and creating a more resilient grid. Through the use of power purchase agreements, nearby residents and workplaces can choose to have their energy sourced from this sustainable energy solution.

Burnt Mountain Natural Area

This project, which is overseen by The Nature Conservancy, is centered around the conservation and protection of Burnt Mountain Natural Area. Burnt Mountain Natural Area is a 5,408-acre forest plot that will remain “forever wild.” “Forever wild” is the highest available legal protection for land in the United States, meaning that the forest must be protected in its natural condition in perpetuity.

Kootznoowoo Forestry Project

The Kootznoowoo Project protects 20,159 acres of forest located on the Dolomi and Dora Bay stretches of Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. 8,000 acres of this project are classified as an old-growth forest - forests with large, old (alive and dead) trees that are virtually undisturbed by human impact. These forests serve as an ecological staple to local animals and nearby communities. This project is unique because it is owned by the native Haida and Tlingit people, who have inhabited this land for over 1,000 years, and managed alongside the United States Forest Service. This joint protection responsibility ensures that indigenous territories are protected and natives voices are heard. This land is home to twelve fish bearing streams and is saturated with various types of berry bushes that are historically significant in the Dolomi and Dora Bay.
