Sustainable Carolina combines the University’s efforts to steadily reduce its environmental footprint through operational improvements, research and students’ experiential learning.

Sustaining water quantity and quality for people and the environment is a growing challenge. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) is committed to working to ensure clean water supplies and functioning ecosystems into the future. We face major challenges around water sustainability, including growing demands for finite water resources, increasing sources and types of contaminants, and a changing climate which disrupts both water supply and delivery.

Our Water Plan lays out past accomplishments, current goals, and visions for the future.

Since signing Second Nature’s Climate Commitment in 2007, Carolina has released an original Climate Action Plan, completed 75% of the strategies from the plan, and reduced its emissions by 32% despite significant campus growth. Carolina released an updated Climate Action Plan in 2021 to introduce new strategies to continue to reduce emissions until the campus is carbon neutral.

The Renewable Energy Special Projects Committee is a student-run committee that manages the money allocated by the Student Renewable Energy Fee to plan and implement renewable energy, energy efficiency and management, and energy education projects on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
