Walmart's supplier requirements

Walmart has set clear supplier sustainability requirements designed to ensure every vendor supports responsible business practices. For suppliers, this means demonstrating credible progress on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, from emissions tracking to ethical labor practices.

By aligning with these standards, suppliers strengthen their partnership with Walmart and stay ahead of global compliance expectations.

Zero emissions across its global operations.

Walmart's ESG reporting requirements

Walmart’s supplier sustainability guidelines focus on reducing emissions, eliminating waste, preserving natural resources, and meeting sustainable sourcing standards. Walmart engages suppliers across six key areas—energy, waste, nature, transportation, packaging, and product design—to drive greenhouse gas reductions throughout its value chain.

The company also prioritizes sustainable commodity sourcing, with defined targets for increasing recycled materials, reducing virgin plastics, and achieving responsible sourcing certifications for select commodities. Suppliers are encouraged to adopt, track and report on sustainable practices to align with Walmart’s broader environmental and social responsibility goals.

Walmart's Project Gigaton

In 2017, Walmart launched Project Gigaton, an initiative aimed at reducing, avoiding or sequestering 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2030. By engaging suppliers with the greatest emissions impact, Walmart reached this goal in February 2024—more than six years ahead of schedule.

Project Gigaton continues today, with more than 6,800 suppliers worldwide participating to accelerate emissions reductions. To join and maintain participation, suppliers must complete Walmart’s registration process and keep their data up to date.

Walmart recognizes top-performing suppliers with Sparking Change and Giga Guru designations. These statuses require reporting Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, setting absolute reduction targets, and disclosing renewable energy usage.
