What General Motors requires

General Motors requires designated suppliers to complete an EcoVadis sustainability assessment and achieve a minimum score of 50 out of 100 in both the Environment and Ethics categories. The mandate applies to certain Tier 1 suppliers based on category and spend.

GM is one of several major automakers using EcoVadis to operationalize supply chain sustainability commitments. Their public commitment to 100% renewable electricity by 2025 and carbon neutrality by 2040 depends partly on the emissions performance of their suppliers, which is why they verify it through EcoVadis.

What happens if you don't meet it

Suppliers who fail to disclose or score below thresholds may face procurement restrictions, including removal from preferred supplier status, exclusion from new RFPs, and increased scrutiny on contract renewals. GM has been increasingly explicit about the commercial consequences of non-compliance.

How to prepare quickly

If GM has requested your EcoVadis score, you have a defined timeline (usually 8-12 weeks) to complete the questionnaire. Most suppliers who fall short have not actually run an EcoVadis cycle before. With the right preparation, hitting 50+ in Environment and Ethics is achievable in a first submission, but only with documentation that reflects what the methodology rewards.

Greenplaces offers a full EcoVadis managed assessment — we routinely take companies from no submission to 50+ in one cycle. Strong Environment scores start with defensible carbon accounting.
