SEBI Business Responsibility & Sustainability Report (BRSR)
SEBI Business Responsibility & Sustainability Report (BRSR): mandatory esg and ghg emissions disclosure for india's top 1,000 listed companies, with phased brsr core third-party assurance.
What it is
The Business Responsibility & Sustainability Report (BRSR) is India's mandatory ESG disclosure framework issued by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) under the Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR). It requires large listed companies to report standardized ESG data alongside financial filings. The enhanced BRSR Core adds a defined set of key metrics subject to third-party assurance, phased in by market capitalization.
Who must comply
India's top 1,000 publicly listed companies by market capitalization must file BRSR. BRSR Core assurance obligations phase in by market cap, starting with the top 150 companies and reaching all top 1,000 by FY 2026-27.
What you must disclose
Companies must disclose Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions on both absolute and intensity bases, energy and water usage, renewable energy mix, and workforce demographics. Reports require board-level approval and annual XBRL filing with the exchanges.
Timeline
BRSR was introduced in May 2021, with BRSR Core following in July 2023. From FY 2022-23 the top 1,000 listed companies must file BRSR.
